Charles Bonnet (Hugh Griffith)is a greedy, money hungry man who gets his money from art forgery. His most precious art is the "Cellini Venus" statue which would be worth about a million bucks if it wasnt fake. His daughter, Nicole (Audrey Hepburn) knows about his crimes, but always keeps quiet about it. One day, Charles' stupidity gets to him and he lends the fake Venus to a museam. The museam people, (thinking it's real) get ecstatic. But, Charles soon finds out that the museam people are gonna check the Venus, just to see if its real. Charles goes crazy and starts worrying. Now, Nicole has to team up with Simon Dermott (Peter O'Toole), a handsome cat burgler and try to steal the Venus from the museam and get rid of it before the people find out its fake, and before Nicole and Simon fall deeply in love.

Novalee Nation, 17 and very pregnant, has never been part of a real home. The closest thing to family for the hard-luck teen is her selfish, would-be musician boyfriend, Willy Jack, with whom she's traveling from Tennessee to California in a rust bucket that used to be a Plymouth. A bathroom stop en route, at an Oklahoma Wal-Mart, changes Novalee's life forever. For when she leaves the store, she discovers that Willy Jack and the Plymouth are gone. Only her Polaroid camera remains in the parking space. Alone and broke, Novalee surreptitiously moves into the vast store, borrowing food and supplies from its shelves. When she gives birth on the floor - and her hideaway is revealed - Novalee and her "Wal-Mart Baby" become instant celebrities. More importantly, over the next few years, Novalee finally becomes part of an unconventional, makeshift family comprised of her wonderfully eccentric new friends. On 1st November 1959, in New York, C.C. "Bud" Baxter is a popular clerk of "Consolidate Life", an insurance company with 31,259 employees. The secret of his success is a well located apartment where he lives that he sublets for his superiors, making him climb to the executive position of 2nd Administrative Assistant very early. He likes the elevator girl Fran Kubelik, a reserved woman considered a "jackpot" among the executives. Fran is the secret lover of the director Jeff D. Sheldrake, a married man that seduced her convincing that he will divorce his wife to stay with her. When Fran tries to commit suicide in Baxter's apartment after a meeting with Jeff, she stays with Baxter while recovering, and he falls in love for her. Later he has to come up to a decision between his excellent position in the company and his love.

In a mountainous South American country, drug-dealing rebels kidnap Peter Bowman, a US engineer who works for an oil company's subsidiary.
